Custom & bespoke software development

Build custom software around the work your business actually does.

Galvia designs and builds custom and bespoke software for organisations that have outgrown off-the-shelf tools or need capability existing systems cannot provide. We work across web, mobile, cloud, data and integration, with the engineering needed to take a defined problem through to a maintainable release.

Belfast-based custom software development for organisations across the UK and Ireland.

The useful question is not “what features can we build?” It is “what software capability does the business actually need?”

When this becomes useful

Off-the-shelf software stops fitting long before the business stops changing.

A custom build becomes sensible when work is being forced around tools, important capability is missing or the cost of manual work and workarounds is becoming harder to justify.

01

The workflow does not fit the product

Staff are adapting the business around fixed software, duplicating work or managing exceptions outside the system.

02

Important systems do not work together

The application needs to sit between existing data, APIs, devices, CRM, ERP or operational tools rather than replace everything.

03

You need capability competitors or vendors do not provide

A customer experience, operational workflow or product feature is commercially important but not available off the shelf.

How we start

Scope the smallest piece of software that can prove value.

We start with the business outcome, users, current systems and constraints. That lets us decide what should be built, what should be integrated and what should stay exactly as it is.

  1. 01

    Define the outcome and users

Clarify the work the software needs to support, who will use it and what would make the project commercially worthwhile.

  2. 02

    Map systems, data and constraints

Identify integrations, access, data movement, security, device, cloud and operational requirements before they become late surprises.

  3. 03

    Deliver the first useful release

Build a bounded first phase, test it against the real workflow and leave clear ownership, documentation and a sensible next step.

Discovery, prototypes and implementation are scoped according to the risk in the project. We do not assume every idea needs a large up-front specification.

Relevant work

Custom software should leave the client with more capability, not more dependency.

These public examples show Galvia working around existing systems, hardware and operational constraints rather than forcing a greenfield rebuild.

LEGACY / CUSTOM APPLICATION

ASM: desktop software to a browser-based, cloud-ready application

Galvia modernised freight-customs software into a browser-based application with automated updates and a reusable component approach, while enabling the client team to keep developing the product.

MOBILE / HARDWARE INTEGRATION

Stimare: shared mobile SDK and barcode-scanner integration

Galvia built a shared mobile SDK, demo application and supporting integration layer across Android and iOS for hardware-integrated barcode scanning.

Talk to the people behind the work

Talk through the software before you lock yourself into the wrong build.

Martin and the Galvia team can help separate the real business requirement from the feature list, identify integration and delivery risk, and work out whether the right first step is a build, prototype, integration or modernisation project.

What we can take on

From a focused workflow to a full business application.

Custom software rarely sits in one neat box. Galvia can cover the application itself and the engineering around it.

Web & business applications

Operational portals, customer-facing applications and internal systems designed around a defined business process.

Mobile applications

Cross-platform and platform-specific applications, including offline workflows and hardware integration.

APIs & system integration

Connect the application to existing services, data and operational systems. See API Development and API Integration.

Cloud, data & modernisation

Build on suitable cloud and data foundations or extend valuable legacy systems rather than replacing them by default. See Cloud Migration and Legacy Modernisation.

Custom Software Project Scoping Brief

Scope the problem before the feature list takes over.

Use the six-page workbook to define the business outcome, users, workflow, systems, data, constraints, release priorities and ownership before you ask anyone to estimate the build.

Before you enquire

The practical questions.

What is custom or bespoke software development?

It is software designed around a specific organisation, workflow, product or customer need rather than configuring a standard product to do roughly the same job.

When is custom software better than an off-the-shelf product?

Usually when the workflow is commercially important, existing products create substantial workarounds, integration is central or the capability itself is part of the organisation's differentiation.

Can Galvia work with our existing systems?

Yes. Many projects are partly an integration problem. We can build around existing APIs, databases, cloud services, operational platforms and useful legacy software.

Do you build web and mobile applications?

Yes. Galvia works across web, mobile, backend, APIs, cloud and data, including applications that need to interact with devices or existing business systems.

Can you take over an existing custom application?

Yes, where source code, access and operational context are available. If the application is unstable or poorly documented, a takeover or rescue phase may be needed first.

How much does custom software cost?

It depends on scope, integrations, risk, security and delivery model. We prefer to define the first useful phase and the main technical unknowns before pretending there is a precise number.

Tell us what the software needs to do

What is the business trying to make possible?

Tell us about the workflow, users, existing systems and the outcome you are trying to create. A rough description is enough for the first review.

  • A person reviews the project before a call is arranged.
  • No passwords, API keys or sensitive customer records in the form.
  • No work or fees are agreed by submitting this form.
